Naming the Community

Hi all,

Can you think of a better name for the TEN Community than 'TEN Community'? We're looking for a name that does the following:

Makes you think of a group of people (ie Community)
Makes you think of a place to put forward an opinion or discuss a topic (ie Talk)
Is easily recognizable by both forum regulars and people who are new to online communities
Is inviting and encouraging for new people to join
Fits in with the TEN brand by being funny/clever/young/funky/cool

Welcome to the Video Hits Community Beta

Welcome to the brand new Video Hits Community. These forums are currently in Beta - there are some known issues that we are working on fixing.

Unfortunately we are not able to move across content from the old Video Hits forum. Additionally at this stage all of your profile information is separate to your existing profile information from the old forum. You can change your new profile information on this page - http://videohits.com.au/community/videohits/w/wiki/default.aspx .

If you encounter any errors while on the new site, please click on "Contact Group Owners". This link is on every page, either in the right hand column or at the bottom of the page on the left. You can also use this link if you see something that isn't working the way it should be. When you do this, please include the following information:

The URL of the page that you noticed the error
Your username
The time that the error occured
A brief explanation of what you were doing when the error occured

If you have any suggestions for improvements, please post those in the forum itself. We will compile them and do what we can, however our first priority is in getting these forums working correctly.

Also if you're discussing the new forums in your post, please use the tag 'new forum' - theoretically this should enable us to pull together all the posts about the new forum and read them in the one place.

You're also welcome to go back to the old forums - http://videohits.com.au/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=39 - we'll keep these live for a while until we are confident these new forums are working the way they should be.

Intro Guide to the Video Hits Forums

Welcome to the Video Hits Forum! This post is aimed to give you some info on how to use the Forums and the best ways to find the threads you're interested in.

Browsing the forums
You do not need to be logged in to view the Forum. But to get off the fence and become involved in the forums you should sign-up as a Video Hits member. Click the 'MEMBERS' tab in the top navigation bar to join.

Once you have created a user account, you can choose to create an online profile so others can learn a little more about you. You can select an Avatar and let the other forum users know a bit more about yourself.

So, you're probably very keen to start posting now, but hang on! Read on to learn how you can avoid some of the more embarrassing forum slip ups.

Posting
To reply to a thread subject, use the 'POST REPLY' button. This will take you to a screen where you may enter your post. Once you are ready to submit your post, click the Submit Reply button.

Quoting
If you wish to reply to a specific post within a thread, you should quote the original post. To do this click on 'Reply' under the post you wish to quote. Once the reply screen opens, choose the Advanced Reply option. Once the post message screen appears, click the "Quote" tab which is under the original post that is shown above the reply box. This will insert the quoted text and you can continue to post as normal.

Watching Threads / Staying Informed
If you want to be reminded anytime a particular thread or forum has been updated, you can opt to 'watch the thread or forum by clicking on the 'WATCH THIS THREAD' icon above the first post in a thread. You can choose when you'd like to be emailed about forum updates. It's a great way to stay informed about updates to your favourite Idols Fan Clubs, especially if you only have a small amount of time available. To stop receiving updates, simply click 'STOP WATCHING THREAD' icon in the thread.

Searching
Before starting a new thread give the search function a whirl. More often than not, it?ll discover a relevant thread or two which will save you having to suffer the moans and groans from the regular forum users who?ve seen it all before.

Moderators
The Video Hits forums have volunteer moderators who help to maintain the balance, encourage lively discussion, and promote healthy debate.

Whatever people?s opinion of moderators, the forum is a much more hospitable and organized affair thanks to their tireless efforts to maintain order in a sometimes chaotic environment. Please assist them in making the Video Hits forums a happy place by co-operating with requests they may make from time-to-time.

The content on the Video Hits forum is moderated based on the Video Hits House Rules. It's important you read the House Rules so that you know what you can and can't do in the forum. Click HERE to have a read.

If you see a post that doesn?t abide by these guidelines, report it to a moderator by clicking the small warning triangle in the top right hand corner of the post.

Spamming
Don?t spam the forums. Spamming is the irksome art of posting duplicate threads across two or more forums. Some people think this is an effective way to get their message across. Co-incidentally these same people are generally loathed by the majority of forum users. No-one wants to read the same message twice, it?s boring.

Advertising/Selling
Advertising is not tolerated on the Video Hits forums, full stop. No matter how ?amazing? your business opportunity is, please don?t post it on the forum. It will be promptly deleted.

Newbies
New members to the forum quite often accidentally commit a forum slip up and become labeled a Newbie/newb/n00b. Newbies are like learner drivers. We've all been one at some point, but we still can?t help but chuckle when we see one.

If you?re new to the forums, a good idea is to dip a toe in by participating in some existing threads to get a feel for things before diving in at the deep end and starting your own thread

Newbies also are quite often confused by some of the slang terms used on the forum. If you come across a slang term you don?t understand make Urban Dictionary your friend.

We've established these House Rules so that everyone can get the most out of the Video Hits online community.

Please remember:

? You are responsible for the content and legality of your posting.

? Respect every participant, including our moderators and administrators.

? Abuse, swearing or personal attacks are not welcome.

? No shouting. Don?t post capitals or mixture of capitals and lower case letters.

? Don't pretend to be another member, admin or celebrity.

? No posting on behalf of suspended or banned participants.

? No off-topic material. Please post in the correct forum.

? Do not create a new topic if one with a similar subject already exists.

All posts remain at our discretion. Posts will be removed if they:

? Contain defamatory, harassing, discriminatory, threatening, violent, false, misleading, offensive, pornographic or otherwise unlawful content.

? Discuss any of the following:

A topic or post that has been removed.
A warning that you of someone else has received.
Any direct communication had with a moderator.
The contents of personal messages with other forum members.
Any contact details, including home address, phone number or email address, or of a moderator or member.

? Are considered spam, advertising, or endorsement of commercial products.

? Contain links to sites promoting or offering illegally download programs or content, such as bittorrent sites.

? Anything of which the poster does not own the copyright. For example, posting a news article into a post is a breach of copyright. If you've found something interesting, link to the page that the original can be found.

? Are deemed off-topic or of a similar subject of an existing thread.

? Contain spoilers, unless the word SPOILER is in capitals in the subject of the post.

Please follow the rules, if you do not you will risk:
? Removal of your posting.
? Having you account suspended.
? Future participation privileges being revoked absolutely and without notice.

Remember Australian Idol Online members are entitled to one account only.

Anything that you feel breaks these rules should be reported. This will bring it to the attention of a moderator. We will aim to deal with inappropriate posts within 48 hours of them being reported.

Remember, Moderators and Administrators are always right. We may also decide to report repeat offenders to their Internet Service Provider, or in serious cases, to legal authorities.

Be Safe

? Our message boards and forums are a public space. Do not reveal any personal information about yourself or anyone else in your postings (including photos, your real name, the name of your family members, your phone number, credit card details etc).
? Never arrange to meet anyone in real life through any forum or message board.
? Don't trust the type. People may not be who they say they are. Use commonsense and report any problems to the moderators.

FORUM FAQs

How do I post a topic?

First you'll need to sign in or create an account. You can do this by clicking the login link at the top of the page. Once you're logged in, you're ready to go.

Inside the Category you wish to post in click ?POST NEW THREAD?, found on the top left of the Category page. Come up with a subject, something that explains clearly what you?re talking about (not ?hi guys? or anything like that), then type away. Click "POST MESSAGE" and you?re done.

How do I reply to a post?

To reply to a thread subject, use the ?POST REPLY? button. This will take you to a screen where you may enter your post. Once you are ready to submit your post, click the Submit Reply button.

How do a quote another post?

If you wish to reply to a specific post within a thread, you should quote the original post. To do this click "REPLY" on the post you wish to quote. Once the post message screen appears, click the "ADVANCED REPLY" tab. You will then see the post you want to quote. Just under the post you will see "QUOTE", just click on quote, this will insert the quoted text and you can continue to post as normal.

So I want to say something, I just post a new topic right?

No, you shouldn't. If everyone posted a new topic for everything they wanted to say we?d have a massive collection of VERY boring conversations. If you want to say something, have a quick scan through the forum that it fits in and see if someone has already said something similar. If so, add your comment to that thread.

Can I say whatever I want?

No, like any social situation, there are simple rules that you should follow. Don?t abuse people. Don?t swear. Don?t give out personal information. Don?t discuss anything that is illegal. It?s mostly common sense, but there are always bad apples. If you see them, make sure you report them by clicking ?REPORT?, that way they can be warned or banned, and the post can be removed.

Someone said something really really stupid, can I tell them what I think?

Sure, but be careful. Text doesn?t take into account tone of voice, so sometimes people take things out of context. This is why it is good to use emoticons in your posts. If you disagree with a post, say so, but under no cir*** may you attack the person. Abuse will be dealt with swiftly by moderators, and if you see this activity happening ensure you report it ASAP.

How do I edit a post?

You can only edit your own post. If you do, it is likely people have read it already, so make a note in there that says it has been edited so they can stay up to date.

Can I use HTML in my posts?

No. This is unfortunate, but due to copyright issues we cannot allow images be included in anyone?s post, and the only way to do this is to disable html.

What are those little smiley faces for?

They're called Smileys or Emoticons because they're used to convey emotion. When you type a message, you don?t see the person?s body language or hear their tone of voice, meaning some messages can be misinterpreted. Smileys help avoid this to a certain extent. You don?t have to just smile, you could have a frown, grin, wink or one of many others.

To include a Smiley in your post, click the "RICH TEXT" tab in the posting window. Then click on the "SMILEY FACE" icon when you wish to insert a emoticon.

I?ve got a great image I want to share with the world, can I post it?

Nope. Don?t get me wrong, we?d love you to, but there are two problems. Firstly, the images may be inappropriate, and secondly even if they?re completely fine and relevant, we will probably not own the copyright in the image. This might be fine for some websites, but for us unfortunately it isn?t.

If you really want to post an image, you can include a link to the site that image exists on, but it must be completely appropriate. Anything inappropriate will be deleted and you will receive a warning or even be banned. If you discover someone who has done this, please report them to us by clicking ?report abuse?.

What does it mean when a topic is locked?

It means it?s been officially closed. No longer can anyone post anything in it anymore. This may be for a number of reasons, and when it occurs the reason will be posted by the moderation team as the last post before it is closed.

Who are these moderator people?

Our Volunteer Moderators are generally leaders in our Community who have been chosen by the Community Managers. The Mod's role is to encourage discussion, help resolve disagreements and keep the forum happy and healthy.

Opposing opinion vs personal attack.

There is a big difference. If you disagree with someone, tell them, but do not attack them personally. Discussion is great, even if people start to get a little passionate, as long as only the issues are attacked and not the person.

There?s another site that I?m involved with... can I tell people about it?

This is a fine line, and it will be up to the admin/moderators to decide. If another site is relevant to discussion then sure, post away, however anything that is seen as being an advertisement will be removed. Please use common sense and accept the decision of admin/mods.

Can I post articles which are relevant to the forum?

This is another copyright issue unfortunately. If you see an interesting article, simply post a link to it. Then once you?ve read it, head on back and discuss what you?ve read. You unfortunately can?t post a whole article on our forums.

I found an interesting topic, but it?s got heaps of messages! Do I just post my message at the end without reading everything?

No. If you do this, often the discussion has moved on, and you may look silly as a result. Make sure you read the most recent posts so that you are up to date with the conversation.

What is a spoiler?

A spoiler is information that gives away something that happens in an episode that hasn?t been shown in on TV yet. Most people don?t want to know what?s happening in future episodes, but prefer to see it as it happens on TV. You have to be very careful about posting spoilers, see below.

If I want to post a spoiler, how do I do it?

Spoilers are fine, so long as they are posted in a topic that has the word "SPOILER" in capital letters in the topic title. Do not under any cir*** post a spoiler in any other topic. If you do, you will be warned or even banned and the post will be removed.

Can I tell people about sites where we can download shows?

No. As this is illegal activity, we cannot allow people to tell other people how or where to obtain pirated copies of movies/shows/games etc. This includes advice on 'bittorrent' and similar peer-to-peer programs.

A Moderator gave me a warning. Can I complain about it on the forums?

No, it's a fundamental rule of the forums that all communication between you and the moderators is not to be discussed on forums. Keep this discussion to private messages.

A Moderator removed this great topic. Should I just start it again?

The topic was removed for a reason. If you do this, not only will it be quickly removed again, you will most likely also receive a ban from the Mods.

The only exception to this is if the topic started off by following the rules, but then went off on a tangent and became a problem topic. If this is the case, you can start a similar topic with a similar subject however be very careful that it doesn't go down the same path as before.

Bob sent me a personal message, it was so fantastic, I have to share it with everyone else.

No you can't. Like communication with moderators, any communication between two members of the forum via the personal messaging system is not to be made public.

But what about if someone sent me a personal message that I think broke the rules?

If this is the case, send a moderator a personal message explaining what was said and they'll deal with it.

The shift key is so annoying, I'll just keep caps lock on and type in capitals.
